A new level for USB and video extender technology

KVM extender specialist Scene Double has unveiled its latest in-house manufactured product - a low-cost range of combined USB-and-video extenders that allow a computer's monitor(s) and USB peripherals to be located up to 50m from the CPU. A fully transparent USB connection enables all manner of USB devices to be extended, rather than just the keyboard and mouse on traditional KVM extenders. Comprising a local unit and a remote unit connected via CATx cable, the new SD-VUE Mini series extenders provide a low/full-speed USB 2.0 link and deliver video signals with a high resolution of 1600 x 1200 at 75Hz, suitable for use with today's TFT displays.

Three models are initially available, offering a single video channel with a 4-port USB hub; dual video channels with a 4-port USB hub; and dual video channels with a 4-port USB hub, a full-duplex serial data link and a bi-directional stereo audio link.

The SD-VUE Mini extenders require only one CATx cable to carry the USB and primary video channel, while a second CATx cable is needed for the second video channel and/or optional audio/serial interfaces.

DDC emulation is included as standard for maximum compatibility with multi-head graphics cards, and all models offer a local video output for each video channel.

The extenders are housed in a small-footprint steel chassis, with front-panel LED indicators to show power and connection status.

Optional rack-mount accessories are available if required.

Simple to install and operate, the extenders are particularly suitable for applications where CPUs may be located in a separate room to protect them from hazards such as adverse environmental conditions, theft or unauthorised installation of software.

Transparent USB extension also makes them ideally suited to multi-media and high-end home entertainment installations.
